Lantern ceremony to mark World Suicide Awareness Day

More than 100 local people braved the windy weather recently for a special lantern ceremony on the seafront to remember loved ones who have lost their lives to suicide.
Although it was a very blustery night and difficult to light the lanterns, as one person who attended said: "The wind was no match for the determination of family and friends who remembered their loved ones - a truly moving experience."
The Bray event was one of a number of similar ceremonies being held simultaneously all over Ireland on 10th September to mark World Suicide Awareness Day, and was organised by the Bray Area Partnership Health Committee.
The idea was for people across the whole island of Ireland to join together at the same time to remember lost loved ones and show unity in the fight against suicide. It is also intended to send a strong message to the government about how many people are suffering through the hurt and pain of suicide and the need for an urgent response plan to be put in place as soon as possible.
The Health Committee has also produced a leaflet called Everybody Hurts Sometimes that lists local and national support groups and contact details for people who may be feeling down or suicidal.
New Tús community work placement scheme
Our two Tús Team Leaders, Steve Huet and Matthew Clarke, started work with us in early August.
Our request to local community and voluntary groups for placement opportunities for the 40 Tús places we have allocated generated more than 50 potential placements.
Steve and Matthew are currently meeting with the 52 people referred to us from the local Department of Social Protection. Having gathered information on each person's work experience, training etc. we will begin matching them to placements. As well as providing an opportunity for the individuals selected to gain work experience and upskill, Tús will also support community and voluntary groups in the greater Bray area to provide and enhance their services.
